Contec Co. Ltd., a manufacturer of PC-based instrument interfaces and industrial computers, has developed two new RS-232C communication port expansion cards for CardBus that comply with the PC Card Standard. "Product name: CardBus RS-232C Serial I/O Card, Model: COM-2(CB)H (2ch type), COM-1(CB)H (1ch type)". The new boards go on sale from October 20.
The PC cards can be used to add one or two additional RS-232C serial communication ports to PCs equipped with CardBus compliant PC card slots. Using the supplied driver software, the ports can be recognized as standard COM ports by operating systems such as Windows and Linux, and can be used in the same way as other COM ports recognized by the operating system. A dedicated API function library is also available for advanced communications programming (available for download free from the CONTEC web site). As the new cards have a high degree of compatibility at the driver level with CONTEC's existing PCI boards, which provide the same function in desktop PCs, existing application software can be reused without modification.
The boards comply with the Phase 2 lead-free level stipulated in the "Guidelines for Displaying the Lead-Free Mark on Mounted Circuit Boards, Electronic Components, and Other Materials Used in Electronic and Electrical Equipment". (Products that satisfy this criterion display CONTEC's proprietary Pb Free mark (see top left of photograph).)
