CONTEC Announces RoHS Directive Compliance Timeline

Contec Co. Ltd., a manufacturer of PC-based data acquisition, industrial computers and networking equipment; is actively working to protect the global environment through the elimination of lead and other harmful substances identified in the RoHS directive.
Contec Co. Ltd. gained its ISO14001 accreditation in June 2002 and recognizes protection of the global environment as an important issue for the entire world. In all of its activities, CONTEC actively seeks to conserve and to make effective use of resources - thus helping to prevent damage to the global environment.
The Contec Group set up a lead-free project in April 2003 to ready itself to supply lead-free products from 2004. Contec has completed the introduction of new mounting technology and commenced supply of lead-free products starting from new products announced in November 2004. Further, Contec plans to work towards being fully lead-free and to eliminate all harmful substances identified in the RoHS directive, including in existing products, by June 2006.

| - Basic Policy |
JEITA (Japan Electronics and Information Technology Association) has advocated the use of "lead-free" solder and the Contec Group conforms to the associated policy guidelines as part of its environmental policy. CONTEC is dedicated to the development of high quality products that give consideration to the global environment.

Lead-free products are identified by Contec's proprietary lead-free symbol.
Products with this symbol comply with Phase 2 or higher of JEITA's lead-free level classification.

The Contec Group is working to complete its lead-free program by June 2006.
In addition to becoming lead-free, the company is also making progress on eliminating harmful substances identified in the RoHS directive.

Lead-free products means those products with a lead content of 0.1wt% or less. |

The Phase 2 lead-free level indicates that circuit board mounting processes such as the treatment of circuit board mounting surfaces, solder printing, and soldering are lead-free and that lead is not contained in the joints on the electronic components mounted on the circuit board. |
- Status of Lead-Free Measures |
A lead-free project was set up in April 2003 to prepare for the production of lead-free products starting in 2004.
The company completed introduction of new mounting technology and was able to commence supply of lead-free products in November 2004.
In terms of quality, Contec has added lead-free solder joint testing to its existing quality assurance process to give customers the guarantee that lead-free products can be used with confidence. In the future, Contec will take an even more proactive approach during new product development by considering environmental issues and "lead-free" will be a requirement for all new product developments.
