Contec Co. Ltd., a manufacturer of PC peripherals, industrial computers, and network equipment, has developed the CPU-SB22/256(FIT), a new small and lightweight, fanless "Microcontroller Unit" PC featuring a 1GB compact flash (abbreviated below as CF) card with Windows XP Embedded preinstalled as a new product in its "F&eIT" series of Ethernet-based distributed monitoring and control network equipment for automation applications. Sales of the new model will commence from the end of February.  The new CPU-SB22(FIT) features a low-power x86 compatible CPU and will be the high-end model in Contec's "Microcontroller Unit" series, a highly regarded range of small and lightweight PCs that feature fanless and diskless operation. A 1GB CF card is used as the storage device and comes with Windows XP Embedded preinstalled. Whereas the storage area available to the user on the previous CPU-SB21/256(FIT)GY model (still on sale) which uses a 512MB CF card is only 145MB, this has been increased to 610MB on the new CPU-SB22(FIT) model, making it suitable for more sophisticated applications that require a larger storage capacity.  Another significant feature is that the EWF function(*) of Windows XP Embedded can be used (via a command line setting) to allow the PC to be turned off without first shutting down the OS.  The "Microcontroller Unit" series are AT compatible compact PCs with x86 compatible CPUs and feature a CF slot for installing a storage device in addition to serial, USB, VGA, PS/2, and other standard PC interfaces. The series can be used as embedded controllers running a general-purpose OS in applications where the available space or power consumption is limited. The series are also equipped with an F&eIT bus (proprietary local bus) which is used in conjunction with stack-mounted external signal I/O modules (device module series) which are sold separately. This allows the units to be used in applications that require input and output of digital or analog signals or that use counter inputs, temperature sensors, RS-232C, or GPIB communication ports.  The series are sold with a general-purpose 35mm DIN rail attachment fitting, a commonly used attachment for installing small industrial equipment. This makes it easy to install the units on control boards that use DIN rails. * EWF function : This is a function specific to Windows XP Embedded that eliminates actual writing of data to storage by emulating writing to the storage device in memory.
