RS-232C Serial Communication Boards Released in Three New Models

CONTEC Co., Ltd., a comprehensive manufacturer of PC peripherals, industrial computers, and network equipment, has developed low-profile, RS-232C serial communication boards in three models (1/2/4-channel types) compliant with a next-generation bus specification of PCI Express (*), as new communication device related products. CONTEC releases the new models from January 10 on.

The new products are low-profile, RS-232C serial communication boards compliant with PCI Express. The board can expand asynchronous RS-232C serial communication ports on a PC with a PCI Express compliant slot. The board is available in three models different in the number of on-board RS-232C serial communication ports: 1-channel type "COM-1C-LPE", 2-channel type "COM-2C-LPE", and 4-channel type "COM-4C-LPE".
The three new models support high-speed communication at up to 921,600 bps. The bundled driver software can be used for Windows and Linux to recognize the on-board ports as OS's standard COM ports, allowing them to be set as COM1 to COM256. The board has high-capacity FIFO buffer memory: 128-byte transmit buffer and 128-byte receive buffer. The FIFO buffer memory can be adjusted in buffer size for starting data transmission/reception. You can optimize the buffer size for each application, for example by increasing the buffer size to reduce the CPU load or decreasing it to improve realtimeness.
The three new models are PCI Express x1 (1 lane) types, compatible with PCI Express slots of x1 to x16 (1 to 16 lanes). The se are low-profile types whose board sizes are 121.69 (L) x 67,90 (H) mm, compatible with both of low-profile and standard slots. (Before the board is shipped from the factory, the bracket for low-profile slot is attached, with the standard-slot bracket bundled.) Note also that these models conform to a lead-free level of Phase 2 defined by JEITA (Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association).

PCI Express ¡ÊRev. 1.0a¡Ë is a new-general bus standard proposed by Intel to meet the needs for faster processors, memory, and general subsystems as well and authorized by the PCI-SIG. Based on the enhancements to the conventional PCI specification, PCI Express dramatically improves the data transfer speed while maintaining high compatibility in software. The PCI Express bus is a serial transfer bus that carries data along two pairs of point-to-point data lanes, providing a data transfer rate of 2.5 Gbps per lane direction. It can consist of groups of lanes.

[Support Software]
Standard COM Driver Software (Bundled)
The purpose of this software is to allow the CONTEC serial communication boards (cards) to be used under Windows or Linux in the same way as the standard COM ports on the PC. By installing additional boards (cards), you can use COM ports in the range COM1 - COM256.
The boards can be used for all types of serial communications such as for remote access service (RAS) and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) applications.
Under Windows, the serial ports can be accessed using the standard Win32 API communication routines (CreateFile( ), WriteFile( ), ReadFile( ), and SetCommState( ), etc.) The serial ports are also compatible with the Visual Basic communication control (MSComm).
Under Linux, the serial ports are compatible with the operating system's standard tty driver. The standard routines including open( ), close( ), read( ), write( ) are supported.

Driver Library API-PAC(W32)
(Available for downloading (free of charge) from the CONTEC web site.)
API-PAC(W32) is the library software that provides the commands for CONTEC hardware products in the form of Windows standard Win32 API functions (DLL). It makes it easy to create high-speed application software taking advantage of the CONTEC hardware using various programming languages that support Win32 API functions, such as Visual Basic and Visual C++.
It can also be used by the installed diagnosis program to check hardware operations.
