Contec launches PC-ESD series;
a new series of a low-cost silicon disk drive
compatible with IDE hard disk

Contec co., ltd, that is a comprehensive manufacturer of PC peripheral equipments, industrial PCs, and networking equipments, has developed a new hard disk compatible semiconductor memory device "silicon disk drive," using flash memory. The new design succeeds in providing a substantial cost reduction from traditional series and low-end products. These new series will sequentially be released as "PC-ESD series" from the middle of February (scheduled).

The "PC-ESD series" is a new series of "silicon disk drive" that provides a substantial cost reduction from traditional "PC-SDD V series" and low-end products by employing a new design, and has a variety of lineups from 500MB, 1GB, 2GB to mass storage models of 4GB and 8GB. The new design achieved a high-reliability system and substantial cost reduction, providing a half price range and four times faster disk access than the traditional series. It also adopts a lead-free design and complies with RoHS directive (planned), concerning for the environment.
The "silicon disk drive" is a hard disk compatible memory device using flash memory and can be used as a disk drive alternative to the hard disk for PC. Since these products do not have any mechanical parts as in the hard disk, they are tolerant to the temperature, humidity, vibration and shocks, and do not make any noise in operation. Therefore, they are suitable for applying a PC system to the applications that require extreme environment tolerance and quietness.

- Containing no rotating or moving part as in hard disk drives, thus best suited for applications which require high environmental resistance (to temperature, humidity, vibration, shock) and for continuous operation for extended periods of time.
- Never making any sound such as motor rotation sound or access noise during seeking, thus best suited for applications which require complete silence.
- Lower in power consumption than hard disk drives.
