CONTEC Co., Ltd. (listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Securities Code: 6639) is pleased to announce our successful new development of a Windows-compliant, environmentally resistant IoT device platform that conforms to railway standard EN 50155 and provides edge computing for moving objects such as railroad vehicles and in harsh environments as well. We have begun sales of this product as the "BX-830," a new BOX Computer series.

With the rapid progress toward the IoT, traffic has explosively increased. Due to the increase in the number of devices, the amount of data sent to data centers has swelled, which has made it impossible for cloud-side analysis and processing to keep up. These issues have led to concerns about delayed operations and system crashes. As the dependency on the cloud increases, importance has been placed on the concept of "edge computing," which reduces the load on the cloud side by having field devices (edges) perform processing on the collected data such as calculations and the decompressed display of compressed image data, as a way to solve the problems mentioned above. This has led to demands for a powerful IoT device platform that can operate stably in a variety of fields.

CONTEC has developed a new product that can meet these needs: the "BOX Computer BX-830 series." This new product is a high-performance, environmentally resistant computer that uses a Quad-Core 1.91 GHz processor, starts and performs continuous operation in environments having ambient temperatures ranging from -40 to 70°C, and has vibration resistance up to 5 G and impact resistance up to 100 G. It conforms to EN 50155 (Class TX) as an electronic device that can be used on railroad vehicles. This product provides powerful edge computing not only for moving objects such as railroad vehicles and automobiles but also in harsh environments such as societal infrastructure and energy, which were conventionally difficult to address.

Features

  • Contributes to reductions in running cost and energy usage

This product uses an Intel® Atom™ processor E3845 with a low power consumption platform, which achieves low power consumption while still providing sufficient performance.

  • Supports a wide range of temperatures with operations guaranteed from -40 to 70°C*

Stable operations of this product are possible over a wide range of temperatures from -40 to 70°C.

    • *
Temperature derating and forced air cooling may be necessary depending on the ambient temperature conditions.
  • Slitless and fanless design that reduces maintenance and inspection work

This product does not use a heat dissipation slit or a CPU fan, uses an SSD (CFast card) for storage, and has a completely spindleless design. This eliminates the need to be concerned about the ingress of dust and other foreign matter into the product. Together with our minimizing of the use of parts that degrade over time, these aspects greatly reduce the work required to maintain and inspect the product.

  • Remote power supply management function that reduces labor requirements

The system can be turned on externally over a network (Wake On LAN) or by receiving signals over a modem (Power On by Ring). This leads to major reductions in the amount of work that is required.

  • Supports railway standards

This product conforms to railway standard EN 50155 (Class TX) and fire safety standard EN 45545-2.* This ensures that the product can operate safely in harsh environments such as railroad vehicles.

    • *
      Type testing has been performed.
  • Reliable design required for embedded applications

On the Windows® Embedded preinstalled model, the OS has an EWF function*, which eliminates concerns about the limitations on the number of times the recording device can be written to and prevents unexpected system changes by preventing unnecessary writing to the recording device.

    • *
EWF (Enhanced Write Filter) is a characteristic function of Windows Embedded Standard that redirects writing to the disk to RAM and similar media in order to protect the disk by restricting the actual writing to it.
  • Removal prevention fittings and clamps are available to prevent problems caused by cable disconnections.
  • Supports a wide range of power supplies from 10.8 to 33.6 VDC
  • Certified device that has passed the connection test with Microsoft Azure IoT Hub
    • *
Windows 10 IoT Enterprise preinstalled model only
