Responsible corporate citizenship has been a core value at Contec right from the start. In 2014, Contec employees with a passion for giving back to the community formed the Community Involvement Committee. The employee-led committee meets monthly to identify and coordinate philanthropic activities like Habitat for Humanity, Keep Brevard Beautiful, OneBlood and Meals on Wheels.

Aging Matters in Brevard and Meals on Wheels

Aging Matters has been supporting senior citizens in Brevard County since 1965. In 1974 Aging Matters joined forces with Meals on Wheels to further their joint mission to improve quality of life for the elderly within the county by ensuring that “no senior goes hungry”.

“Volunteering for Meals on Wheels allows us to give back to a demographic of our community that often times gets over looked. We volunteer to bring smiles to their faces and take a few minutes to have some personal conversation that they don’t get very often. Knowing we make even a little bit of a difference in their day makes the time we give so rewarding.” - Emily Shockley & Monica Hendricks, Customer Support Specialists

Contec Joins the Fight

Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday groups of trained Contec volunteers devote their lunch break to visit the homes of eligible senior adults, providing a hot prepared meal, safety check and a little cheer.

“Meals on Wheels makes such a difference to the lives of the people they are able to help. Not only do we deliver meals, but our visit is a safety check to ensure they are all right, and also to share friendship as we are often the only people that they will see that day. All in all, it leaves you with great satisfaction in hopes that you made their day a little better.” - Claire Huff, Customer Support Specialist, 9 month veteran of the program

Why We Do It

The senior population in Florida alone is around 4.7 million with 70% of this population either struggling with hunger, living in or near poverty or isolation. For millions of elderly Americans, the Meals on Wheels initiative prolongs their independence by allowing them to remain living in their homes instead of having to relocate to a nursing facility. Research has proven that when seniors have the right support around them, they gain a greater quality of life, have improvements in their health and feel safer and secure in their own homes.
