Since our inception in 1991, Contec has encouraged employee health and wellness through a variety of programs ranging from organized sports teams to informative “health facts” campaigns. In early 2015, we carried this philosophy a step further and created a formal, employee-led group aimed at supporting employee health and wellness through an ongoing series of programs. This month the Contec Wellness Committee joined the Every Body Walk! Collaborative and launched its own “Every Body Walk” campaign.

The Contec Every Body Walk! Program challenges employees to walk a total of 91,000 steps during their lunch breaks over a period of 14-weeks. Those that meet the goal are rewarded with an extra half-day of vacation time (4 hours). Steps are tracked by a pedometer which is provided to participants at the beginning of their lunch break. Upon returning for work, the pedometer is turned in and results are recorded.

“Taking a break from sitting in front of a computer all day helps clear our minds and get the blood flowing again. It’s a great way to stay active and we enjoy the social interaction with our coworkers."

- Lisa & Monica, Contec Customer Support Specialists

The benefits of this campaign lie not only in the physical health of Contec employees but in their mental and emotional health as well. Walking helps to relieve the stresses of the day and allow employees to return to work refreshed.

The inaugural program has been a great success with nearly one third of all local employees participating. Committee member, Kellie Winebrenner commented, “One of the goals of the program is to improve the overall wellness of our employees by reinforcing healthy habits. If all goes well, I anticipate repeating the program several times a year to keep the momentum going.”
